Most undergrads start and stop their consulting search at McKinsey, BCG, and Bain. That's three jobs out of a market that has at least a dozen seats worth wanting, several of which are easier to land and better for specific career goals. The reader who only applies to MBB is leaving real offers on the table. This list ranks the ten consulting jobs worth your applications in 2026, by entry-level role, with eligibility and where to apply. I went through MBB on-cycle recruiting myself, so I have direct line of sight into McKinsey; for the rest, I'm ranking from what I see across the WSG candidates we coach into each firm every cycle.
A note on timing before the list: MBB recruiting has moved dramatically earlier and faster than it used to. Firms now open and close an entire cycle within a few months, sometimes opening a full year ahead of the internship itself, and deadlines shift year to year. Don't anchor to a season — check each firm's careers page directly for your specific class year, and if you're a sophomore, look now at the affinity programs (McKinsey Insight, BCG's Bridge/Empower programs, Bain's Experience/Build), since those windows tend to open earlier than the standard internship application.
Which consulting job should an undergrad actually target?
The one that matches your GPA, your school, and your career goal, not just the highest-prestige name. A pharma-bound candidate is better served at ZS Associates than in a generalist McKinsey seat, and a strong non-target candidate has far better odds at a Big 4 strategy practice than at MBB. Apply across tiers in the same cycle, because the case prep transfers directly.
Do these jobs all use the case interview?
Yes. Every firm on this list screens with a case interview, and most pair it with a pre-interview assessment and a behavioral round. That's good news: prep once and you're prepped for all of them. The firm-specific differences are in case style and the online assessment, not the underlying skill.
1. McKinsey Business Analyst
McKinsey's Business Analyst role is the most prestigious undergrad consulting seat and the strongest general-purpose launchpad, at the cost of the toughest funnel.
Entry role: Business Analyst (BA); summer version is Business Analyst Intern
Where to apply: mckinsey.com/careers
Eligibility: rising juniors for the junior-summer internship; no official GPA cutoff, but 3.5+ is the practical floor at target schools and 3.7+ reads as strong
Assessment: McKinsey Solve game, then interviewer-led cases and the PEI behavioral
Best for: candidates who want maximum optionality and the strongest training program
McKinsey's BA opens more doors two years out than almost any entry-level job in the economy, from private equity to tech to sponsored MBAs. Apply here first if you can clear the bar, but never make it your only application.
2. BCG Associate
BCG's Associate role matches McKinsey on prestige and pay while offering the strongest digital and data-science work of the three MBB firms.
Entry role: Associate; summer version is Summer Associate
Where to apply: careers.bcg.com
Eligibility: rising juniors; GPA bar comparable to McKinsey
Assessment: the Casey chatbot online case, then candidate-led cases
Best for: candidates drawn to digital transformation, analytics, and a more freeform case style
BCG's candidate-led case rewards people who like to drive their own structure, and its BCG X practice (formerly GAMMA) is the best in-house data offering at MBB.
3. Bain Associate Consultant
Bain's Associate Consultant role is the most private-equity-adjacent MBB seat and has the most collegial culture of the three.
Entry role: Associate Consultant (AC); summer version is Associate Consultant Intern
Where to apply: bain.com/careers
Eligibility: rising juniors; GPA bar comparable to the other two
Assessment: Bain Online Test or SOVA, then candidate-led cases with heavy synthesis emphasis
Best for: candidates eyeing a private equity exit or who value team culture
Bain's Private Equity Group does live LBO diligence, and Bain Capital is among the most common exits, so the AC seat is the MBB role most pointed at buy-side careers.
4. Oliver Wyman Consultant
Oliver Wyman is the strongest non-MBB option for anyone targeting financial services strategy, and its FS track pays a premium over the rest of the firm.
Entry role: Consultant; summer version is Summer Consultant
Where to apply: oliverwyman.com/careers
Eligibility: rising juniors; quantitatively strong candidates favored
Assessment: candidate-led case with a heavy mental-math round
Best for: candidates focused on financial services, insurance, risk, or actuarial work
OW's Financial Services practice is the deepest non-boutique FS practice in consulting, and it recruits on a nearly separate track.
5. EY-Parthenon Associate
EY-Parthenon offers MBB-comparable strategy work with one of the largest commercial due diligence dealflows in the industry, making it a direct pipeline to private equity.
Entry role: Associate; summer version is Summer Associate
Where to apply: ey.com careers, EY-Parthenon track specifically
Eligibility: rising juniors; broader school targets than MBB
Best for: candidates who want PE-style diligence reps and a higher-probability shot than MBB
EY-Parthenon analysts get serious commercial due diligence experience — the same workflow a PE associate runs — which is why it places into PE associate seats at meaningful rates. Apply to EY-Parthenon specifically, not the broader EY Strategy and Transactions pool; the lift comes from the Parthenon strategy and diligence work, and the two pipelines are easy to confuse.
6. Monitor Deloitte Business Analyst
Monitor Deloitte is the strategy arm inside Deloitte, and it hires a larger class than MBB while doing genuine growth and M&A strategy work.
Entry role: Business Analyst; summer version is Summer Business Analyst
Where to apply: Deloitte careers, Monitor Deloitte track specifically
Eligibility: rising juniors; broader targets than MBB
Best for: strong non-target candidates who want real strategy work at higher odds
The critical move here is confirming you're recruiting for Monitor Deloitte specifically, not the broader Deloitte Consulting pipeline — the names get blurred on purpose, and the two are different trajectories.
7. Strategy& Associate (PwC)
Strategy& pairs strategy work with PwC's deals practice, giving a clearer M&A-adjacent track than most pure strategy firms.
Entry role: Associate; summer version is Summer Associate
Where to apply: strategyand.pwc.com careers
Eligibility: rising juniors; comparable bar to tier 2
Best for: candidates aiming at private equity or corporate development exits
Strategy&'s deal-advisory work sits close to PwC's M&A practice, which positions analysts well for corporate-development and PE moves.
8. L.E.K. Consulting Associate
L.E.K. is one of the top two life-sciences consulting practices and does heavy PE commercial due diligence, making it a strong direct path to the buy-side.
Entry role: Associate; summer version is Summer Associate
Where to apply: lek.com/careers
Eligibility: rising juniors; quantitatively heavy cases
Best for: life-sciences-interested candidates and anyone wanting repeated CDD reps
L.E.K. analysts run commercial due diligence repeatedly, which is essentially the PE associate workflow, and the firm's life-sciences practice is elite.
9. ZS Associates Decision Analytics Associate
ZS Associates is the specialist seat for pharma and healthcare analytics, and for that career goal it beats a generalist MBB role.
Entry role: Decision Analytics Associate / Business Consulting Associate
Where to apply: zs.com/careers
Eligibility: quantitatively strong candidates; broad school targets
Best for: candidates committed to pharma, healthcare, or analytics-heavy consulting
ZS is one of the deepest healthcare and pharma consulting shops, with a strong analytics bent, and it hires larger, more accessible classes than MBB.
10. Analysis Group Analyst
Analysis Group is the top economic consulting seat for quantitatively rigorous undergrads who'd rather do deep analytical work than slide-heavy strategy.
Entry role: Analyst
Where to apply: analysisgroup.com/careers
Eligibility: economics, math, and quantitative majors favored; strong GPA
Best for: candidates who love rigorous economics and analytics, and many use it as a pre-PhD or pre-law springboard
Economic consulting work centers on litigation, antitrust, and economic analysis rather than corporate strategy, and Analysis Group is among the strongest names in it alongside Cornerstone Research.
What's not on this list
A few names you'd expect are missing on purpose. Accenture Strategy and broader Big 4 advisory roles are real jobs, but the "strategy" label inside those firms often sits closer to implementation than the seats above, so confirm exactly which track you're being recruited into before treating it as a strategy role. Pure technology-implementation and systems-integration roles are also excluded; they're legitimate careers but a different job from management consulting, with different exits. And boutique strategy shops beyond ZS, like Putnam, Clearview, and Simon-Kucher, are worth applying to if their specialty matches your goal, even though only one boutique made the ranked list.
Where to start
Check each firm's careers page now rather than waiting for a "season" — cycles for the same class year now vary by months across MBB, and some windows close before you'd expect. If you're a sophomore, the affinity programs are your highest-leverage move: McKinsey Insight, Bridge to BCG, and Bain's Build/Experience programs. Either way, the case prep is shared across every firm on this list, so the reps you put in now pay off no matter which offer you end up taking.
The broader point is that prestige and fit are not the same thing. The highest-ranked name on this list is not automatically the best job for you. Someone set on private equity may get more out of L.E.K. or EY-Parthenon's diligence reps than out of a generalist BCG seat, and a strong non-target candidate has a real shot — and a genuinely good career — at Monitor Deloitte or Strategy&, rather than a long-shot MBB application. Rank these by your goal and your odds, not just by the logo, and apply widely enough that one bad interview day does not end your cycle.
